Imagine two days. On one, most of the work happens in an editor and terminal, with occasional reading elsewhere. On the other, the day moves between calls, documents, design work, and screen sharing. The same reminder settings may feel very different across those days.

Before choosing either app, list three situations in which a prompt would be useful and three in which you would want it delayed. This gives you a more useful evaluation than counting settings.

Compare what each app watches

VibePause watches the coding apps you select: editors such as VS Code, Cursor, Xcode and Zed, the Codex and Claude desktop apps, and terminals including Terminal, iTerm2, Ghostty and Warp. Command-line agents such as Claude Code or the Codex CLI count through the terminal they run in. VibePause does not see agent jobs running in the background or in a browser tab.

Its session clock runs while one of those apps is in front and pauses when you go idle, after 15 minutes by default. You can change that threshold, and optional Input Monitoring permission makes idle detection more precise. The clock describes the work it tracks, not every minute you spend at the screen.

LookAway runs a screen-break schedule for the whole Mac. Its Smart Pause holds a due break during meetings and calls, screen recording and sharing, video playback, full-screen games, and deep-focus apps you choose. Its Mac App Store listing says stepping away counts as a break.

Check what happens after the prompt

VibePause offers guided breaks: a 20-second eye rest, a one-minute stretch, and two-minute breathing and body-scan guides. Pip, an optional desk companion, can join them. Reminders arrive as a floating banner or in Pip’s speech bubble, and Quiet Hours or Pause reminders keep them away when you need quiet.

LookAway gives a heads-up before a break, with snooze options and a floating countdown. It also offers posture and blink reminders, planned breaks at fixed times, and break timers that sync to an iPhone or iPad.

Neither app can choose a safe stopping point in your code or make a medical judgment about what you need.

Bought direct, a Single license is US$19 for one Mac with a year of updates, Personal is US$29 for two, and Believer is US$99 for five with lifetime updates. Another year of updates for a direct license is discounted, and LookAway is also included in Setapp.

When LookAway is the better pick

Choose LookAway if your day is full of calls, screen sharing, recordings, or video, and you want breaks to wait for them without touching a setting. VibePause does not detect any of those.

LookAway also fits better if much of your screen time happens outside coding apps, if you want posture and blink reminders, if you want breaks on your iPhone or iPad too, or if your Mac runs macOS 13, which VibePause does not support.

When VibePause is the better pick

Choose VibePause if your screen time is mostly coding, in an editor, a terminal, or an AI coding app such as Codex or Claude, and you want reminders tied to that work instead of the wall clock. Its session clock stops when you step away and picks up again when you return to your tools.

It also suits you if you want guided breaks rather than a plain countdown, a desk companion that reacts to long sessions, history that stays on your Mac with no account, and one purchase instead of recurring payments.

Make the decision from your checklist

Go back to the situations you listed. If most of the ones you want delayed are meetings and video, LookAway handles them on its own.
