Compare VibePause and LookAway by the work they follow, break controls, and purchase terms. Choose around your Mac workflow and everyday needs.

The short answer

Start with your work pattern. VibePause centers selected developer apps and guided breaks. LookAway documents broader interruption-aware behavior for a general Mac workday. Compare the situations you need covered before comparing prices.

We make VibePause. This is a documentation-based comparison, not a hands-on benchmark of every app. External features and prices were checked against the linked product sources on September 9, 2026.

Describe the workday you want covered

Imagine two days. On one, most of the work happens in an editor and terminal, with occasional reading elsewhere. On the other, the day moves between calls, documents, design work, and screen sharing. The same reminder settings may feel very different across those days.

Before choosing either app, list three situations in which a prompt would be useful and three in which you would want it delayed. This gives you a more useful evaluation than counting settings.

Compare the timing model

VibePause follows foreground time in selected developer apps and pauses with idle detection. That gives the session a coding-workflow focus. It does not measure all screen activity, assess task difficulty, or know whether a background job is done.

LookAway’s product page documents automatic pauses during calls, screen recording, video playback, and other situations. If those interruptions are central to your day, review its current controls and supported behavior directly.

Check what happens after the prompt

VibePause includes guided eye, posture, and breathing breaks, along with Quiet Hours and manual Focus Blocks. The practical question is whether you want a short activity to follow or simply a signal to leave the screen.

Try to describe the action you want the reminder to lead to. A brief look away, standing up, and a longer walk have different practical requirements. Neither app can choose a safe stopping point in your code or make a medical judgment about what you need.

Read the purchase terms separately

The LookAway direct license includes one year of updates, with optional renewal for newer versions. Its site says you can keep using the version you have. Other distribution channels have their own terms, so do not assume the direct price applies everywhere.

VibePause is a single paid Mac App Store download with the current features included. Check your local storefront for the amount you will pay. Do not choose based on an implied lifetime promise about every possible future product or feature.

Make the decision from your checklist

Choose VibePause when the coding-session model and guided-break workflow match what you want. Give LookAway serious consideration when its documented interruption controls address the situations you listed. If you need a free cross-platform starting point, compare Stretchly or BreakTimer too.

After installation, inspect your usual workday: select your apps, step away, return, and try the quiet-time controls. If a behavior is essential, establish it in your environment rather than inferring it from the word “smart.”

  1. Confirm compatibility before installing.
  2. Read the app’s permission explanation.
  3. Check the behavior during your normal focused work.
  4. Review the controls around your quiet periods.
  5. Keep the app whose ordinary behavior you understand and will use.
