Mac break reminders not showing? Check notifications and Focus
Work through missing Mac break reminders in order: app timing, quiet periods, notification settings, and Focus. Find useful details before asking for help.
The short answer
First check whether the app intended to deliver a reminder. Then check the delivery channel, macOS notification settings, and Focus. A missing banner does not necessarily mean the timer has failed.
Establish what should have happened
Write down the app, the approximate time, and what you expected to see or hear. A menu-bar indicator, a floating banner, a Notification Center notification, and a sound are different outputs. An app may provide more than one of them.
Check the reminder interval and whether the app is running. For a session-based app, inspect whether the current activity is being counted. A countdown that has not reached its threshold cannot establish a delivery problem.
Check the app’s own timing and quiet controls
In VibePause, start with your selected apps and current session state. The timer follows foreground activity in monitored developer apps and pauses with idle detection. Time spent elsewhere may not mean what you expect it to mean on the session clock.
Review Quiet Hours, timing controls, and any active manual Focus Block. These are separate from macOS Focus. Change one relevant setting at a time so you can identify what affected the reminder.
Inspect the macOS notification settings
Open System Settings and find Notifications, then select the reminder app. Review whether notifications are allowed and how they are presented. Use Apple’s current documentation for the macOS version you are running if the labels differ.
Also distinguish a visual notification from a sound. An alert can be present without being audible. Check the app’s tone choice and your Mac’s current audio output before increasing volumes or changing several settings at once.
Review the active macOS Focus
Focus can allow or silence notifications from selected apps. Check the active Focus and its allowed-app configuration. If you use Focus across Apple devices, inspect whether that shared state explains an unexpected quiet period.
For a controlled test, observe a reminder with the relevant Focus inactive, then restore your preferred setting. If you want the app allowed during a particular Focus, adjust that allowance deliberately. Avoid disabling all quiet controls as a permanent workaround.
Run a small, controlled check
Keep a note of your original settings. Use the shortest supported reminder interval that is practical for a test, stay in a tracked app if required, and observe the expected output. Restore your normal interval afterward.
An app’s preview button may test appearance or sound without exercising the real timer. A successful preview is useful, but it does not establish that session tracking and delivery work together. Record what you actually tested.
- Confirm the app is open and the intended activity is counted.
- Check the reminder threshold and quiet periods.
- Inspect notification permission and presentation.
- Review the active Focus.
- Observe one real reminder cycle.
- Restore any temporary test settings.
Send a useful support report
If the problem remains, include the macOS version, app version, approximate time, expected reminder type, and which checks you completed. Mention whether a menu-bar indicator or another delivery channel worked.
